A “Generations” family shoot is where more than two generations of the family come into the studio for a portrait session.

They are great fun but can be hard work when you have to contend with the various groupings, especially if there are young children. However, I’m very experienced in these sorts of shoots and work quickly to ensure we get the groupings correct whilst getting a good variety of shots AND making sure the kids don’t go past their sell by date!

The results are always rewarding and its great to see the emotion on the various family members when they come back to see their pictures.

Just finished off the framing of the images from a recent family photography session.

Austin and Claire came in with their 18 month old daugther Daisy. She’s a real character and was great in front of the camera.

Sometimes it takes a wile for kids to get used to the environment and having their photos taken but Daisy hit the ground running on this one!

I got a great selection of shots, some of which you can see in the slide show below.

Maternity photography

The older I get, the harder it is for me to remember the people and events of my past.  What I would give to have pictures that helped me to remember those times.

As I began to have a children of my own, I realized that I didn’t want to forget any of the special moments that each of my kids created. I didn’t want to forget the way my oldest daughter used to stick out her tongue or the way my youngest son used to love wearing his daddy’s baseball caps over his head. Fortunately, I will not have to forget any of the special things that each of my kids do because one of the first purchases I made as a new parent was a nice camera. I cannot afford to not have pictures that capture moments and help me to cherish them as my children get older and life changes. I missed out on too many moments that were perfect for pictures during my own growing up years that I certainly will not repeat that same mistake with my own family.

Fun family photography

I would encourage you, no matter how young or old you are or no matter what stage of life you are in, to get a camera and begin to take pictures. Go crazy taking pictures of the people and places you love most. Your friends and family might get annoyed with your constant desire to make memories, but I guarantee that at some point soon they will thank you for being committed to taking pictures and to preserving great memories.

I love pictures because they are such a simple yet great way to keep a record of events, ceremonies, and the every day moments that make life worth living. I cherish every picture that I take because I know that in some small way I am making a fleeting moment last a little longer. Every time I take more pictures I get excited to develop them and to see how they help to reflect upon and remember moments as life continues to speed by.

If the only thing that is stopping you from having great pictures is the expense of purchasing a camera, then allow me to ease your mind. There are a wide variety of one time use or disposable cameras available for just a few dollars. These cameras allow you to take the pictures you still want without having to pay big dollars for a fancy camera.

Don’t let another family event or fun evening with friends pass by without you getting a camera and snapping pictures that can last a lifetime. You and the ones who come behind you will be so thankful that you did.

I found a really nice post on Julie Silvers blog about having a maternity photography session or “bump” session.

We had both of our children photographed at this stage, and really glad we did. After all it is you first family portrait!

Most women feel very self concious about there body’s at this point so it can be a very difficult thing to decide to do. Also its not for everybody so you have to feel very comfortable doing it.

Julie gives a great overview of why she did it and how the photo session went, well worth a read if you are not too sure whteher to get one done. I always advise to go ahead as once they are out they are not going back in!

Family portrait photography

A family portrait is more than a photograph, it is a veritable heirloom that will be passed down from generation to generation, a rich artefact of family tradition that will speak to your kids and grandkids of their past, and where they come from. Photographing newborn babies if often quite difficult but this session was a breeze!

Daniel and Laura brought in Faye their 1o week old daughter recently for some pictures in the studio. Usually photographing such a young baby can be tricky as they are not that expressive and spend most of the time gurning! But baby Faye is a trouper, maybe she’s a super model to be, although tantrums are NOT permitted in my studio!

We started off with some shots with mum and dad together and then some with Faye and Daniel and then Faye and Laura and finally just on here own. For this photography shoot I used the black background as we were going to get Faye out of her clothes and into a nice terry cloth nappy. Normally I have a white background but a babies pale skin can easily get lost against the white, black makes them stand out much more.

I always think this style of baby photography looks much nicer in black and white it seems to give it a more timeless look and concentrates the eye much more on the people.

A baby photographer needs lots of patience as you can’t ask them to do anything you just have to hope that things will work out. Also its a lot more off than on as they can get tired quite quickly so you have to plan lots of opportunity to rest and often feed!
